ECONOMIC IMPACT OF CORONAVIRUS

It's vital that the Government supports businesses and organisations in our community who will be affected by the pandemic, including guidance about social gatherings and the need to self-isolate.

Many local jobs and livelihoods are dependent on our local economy as well as the national economy, and I have taken every opportunity to press Ministers on the need for urgent action.

HOLDING THE GOVERNMENT TO ACCOUNT

My primary responsibility as your local MP is trying to make sure the Government is doing the right thing, whether this is in response to the virus itself, or in the support it offers to businesses and individuals affected by lockdowns.

LATEST ACTION

In recent weeks, I voted against the renewal of the Coronavirus Act because I do not believe it is justifiable to extend its draconian powers.

TODAY'S BUDGET

Caroline Lucas MP is calling on the Chancellor to give urgently needed support to small businesses in Brighton which are facing huge disruption and losses because of the coronavirus.

Brighton and Hove is particularly vulnerable because of the importance of the hospitality industry to the local economy.  The city’s language schools are also suffering, with a drop in enrolments of as much as 80 percent.

SURVEY ON AIRBNB

I am calling on the Government to make it easier for councils to impose a 90-day cap on homes let out on Airbnb and other online platforms, handing control of the short-term let sector to the council, as is happening in Scotland.

TEACH THE FUTURE ON CLIMATE CRISIS

I believe that climate and environmental teaching is a vital part of a child’s education. But our education system is not giving students a real understanding of the climate emergency or environmental issues.  Learning about the climate and biodiversity crises is restricted to the optional geography GCSE or is, briefly, touched on science classes.  It’s not surprising that most students leave school with a limited knowledge of the climate emergency but wanting to know more.
