Big Lemon solar bus launch

These will run to the city centre from Woodingdean – giving the city a route that's now entirely emission-free!

I attended the launch of the Big Lemon’s very first bus service in 2007 and the progress made since then is just amazing.

One thing that’s clear from the first ten years of the Big Lemon is that, under the leadership of inspirational founder and chief executive Tom Druitt, the company is consistently pioneering. It was the first to run a bus fleet on waste cooking oil and is now the first in the UK to run zero-emission electric buses on solar energy.

The buses will be charged from the panels on the roof of the Big Lemon’s solar depot and their batteries mean they’ll still run whatever the weather (there’s a handy illustration about this here: https://thebiglemon.com/).

The Big Lemon has shown how a different way of running a bus service is possible and a different way of doing business is possible. It’s contributing to a revolution in transport: similar to the groundswell that’s taking place on energy, communities are taking action to develop sustainable transport and to put people before profit – and I’ll back them all the way in doing so.
