Rail Minister: ‘Announcement on compensation is imminent’

- New Rail minister pressed on train failures by Brighton MPs

The new Rail Minister, Paul Maynard, was pressed to act on the train chaos on Southern Rail by Caroline and Peter Kyle MP earlier today. The two Brighton & Hove MPs were joined by Nicholas Soames and Nick Herbert in pressing the Minister on the serious problems that have occurred this year.

When the Minister was pressed on the issue of compensation by Caroline he said that ‘an announcement on compensation is imminent’ and that it ‘needs to reflect what people have gone through’. Lucas has been calling for compensation to be given to anyone who suffers delays of over 15 minutes, down from the 30 minute cut off currently in place.

Lucas also expressed her outrage at the service on the line and impressed upon the Minister her concerns about passengers being injured or killed due to the severe overcrowding at Brighton Station.

After the meeting Caroline said:

“I am thankful to the Minister for taking the time to meet with us today. He’s new to the job and seems committed to making things better. In the coming days we will see if his Government’s actions match his words – and if they take this crisis as seriously as they should. ”
