I spoke to Channel 4 News on Wednesday about the coronavirus outbreak in Brighton and, in particular, on the lack of information available to people.
When there is an information vacuum, it fosters speculation which can then cause anxiety and even panic, especially in the age of social media. This is then sometimes fuelled by media reporting.
I believe that the public health authorities, particularly Public Health England and the local council, need to be giving more detailed information in a more timely way that goes beyond things like the use of tissues and hand washing.
I hope that when this outbreak is over, there will be a reflection on the response by the government, public health authorities, local councils and the media
