Caroline Lucas: Nuclear announcement takes us a step further towards a calamitous mistake

Caroline has responded to a Government statement on a new nuclear power station. In a statement presented to the House of Commons today the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy said that the Government is to consider direct investment to build a new nuclear power station at Wylfa on Anglesey.

Caroline Lucas said:

"This announcement takes us a step further towards a calamitous mistake by a Government who are utterly failing on energy policy. Taking a stake in this nuclear monstrosity would see taxpayers locked into the project, and paying out for a form of electricity generation that's not fit for the future.

"We know that nuclear is vastly overpriced, and that we have no solution to the waste problems it presents, yet Ministers are ploughing ahead regardless. Parliament deserves a vote on the Government's nuclear plans - and we now need to see Labour join those of us opposing this march towards a multibillion pound nuclear fiasco. At the very least the Government should publish a full value for money assessment before any decision is made so we aren’t lumbered with eye watering  costly energy for decades to come."
