Re: Bee Populations and Pesticides
I am writing on behalf on my constituents to raise the issue of the impact of neonicotinoids pesticides on bee populations across the UK. As you will know, bees are a vital part of the UK’s ecosystem, and it is vital we work to secure a thriving and vibrant bee population. It is in this context, that a growing body of evidence now exists that details the disastrous impact of certain pesticides on bee populations.
As you may know, studies have shown that neonicotinoids reduce the number of bumblebee queens produced, as well as severely cuting the survival and reproduction of honeybee queens. New research published in July of last year showed how neonicotinoids affect male bee fertility. Indeed, the dangers associated with neonicotinoids has led the European Commission to recommend a total ban on these bee-killing pesticides.
In light of the clear evidence of their disastrous impact on bee population, I was deeply disappointed to learn that the National Farmers Union has again applied to use neonicotinoid pesticides on rape-seed crops again this year. I strongly urge the government to reject that application – as it did last year – and ban the use of such pesticides on any crops in the UK. We must protect bees – they are vital to a thriving natural environment, and to restoring nature and wildlife.
