Folkestone Book Festival: Creative Folkestone: Who Do We Think We Are?

‘England is at a crossroads – its story is still being written. So who do we want to be? In this hopeful and galvanising event, former MP and Green Party leader Caroline Lucas invites us to reimagine the country we call home – not as a place defined by exclusion or decline, but as one shaped by care, creativity and shared belonging. A bold, timely conversation for anyone who believes the future of England is still up for grabs – and worth fighting for.’

The Climate Majority Project ‘SAFER’ Launch

Join the CMP in a discussion of Strategic Adaptation For Emergency Resilience

SAFER (Strategic Adaptation for Emergency Resilience) is a new campaign from the Climate Majority Project. SAFER wants our communities here in the UK to be more resilient in the face of climate change but for this to happen we need to adapt and we need governments to act. The ‘SAFER’ campaign have created a petition asking the government to protect UK communities from climate chaos and fund a National Climate Resilience Plan. Join us and sign this petition here: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/730062

Saturday 28th June - Glastonbury Festival

OK so I’m at a bit of a distance but it’s me - honest!

What an enormous privilege to speak on Pyramid stage on behalf of CND UK. This year is 80th anniversary of bombing of Hiroshima & Nagasaki, which killed and maimed hundreds of thousands of people. Today the 9 nuclear states have amassed the equivalent of 145,000 Hiroshima bombs - and our own Govt is spending £15bn on bolstering UK’s own nuclear arsenal. They can find billions for bombs but couldn’t money to halt benefit cuts for disabled people.

Reclaiming our National Story for a Greener Future

Englishness has long been monopolised by those fixated on nostalgia and exclusion. But another England exists – one rooted in inclusivity and a profound relationship with the natural world.

Caroline Lucas, pioneering environmentalist and former Green Party MP, draws from England’s literary and cultural heritage to unearth a vision of Englishness grounded in sustainability, fairness, and shared responsibility. From John Clare’s celebration of nature’s delicate ecosystems to Charles Dickens’ piercing critiques of social inequality, these threads reveal a tradition of empathy and justice woven deep into our cultural fabric.

Through rediscovering these stories, Lucas demonstrates how embracing a broader, more compassionate understanding of Englishness can empower us to confront the climate emergency and drive transformative change.

Join her and Xiaolu Guo at The Conduit as she explores how reimagining national identity can serve as a powerful tool for environmental and social renewal.

I loved speaking with inspirational writer & activist Rebecca Solnit during Brighton Festival : “Hope is an embrace of the unknown & unknowable…it’s the belief that what we do matters even though how & when it may matter, who & what it may impact, are not things you can know beforehand”

It was a huge honour to be in conversation with Robert MacFarlane about his new book ‘Is A River Alive?’ during Brighton Festival. And so pleased that Emily O'Brien and Love Our Ouse got a well-deserved shout-out for all their work on Rights of Rivers.
