Lucas: 'Serious questions' hang over May's judgement on Trident tests

Caroline Lucas has responded to Downing Street's confirmation that Theresa May withheld the results of 'failed' tests on Trident missiles from Parliament. The Prime Minister's spokesperson confirmed that Theresa May was told about the test of a Trident missile that reportedly misfired, two weeks before she held a House of Commons vote on renewing the multibillion pound weapons system.

Caroline said:

“Theresa May must come to the House of Commons today to answer questions on this profoundly worrying test failure. The fact that she knew about the test before the debate in Parliament raises serious questions over her judgement. There is no excuse for hiding vital evidence from MPs.

“The least that the British public should be able to expect from the Government is honesty on national security issues – and Theresa May owes the country an apology over her handling of the results of this test.”

Lucas also reiterated her earlier remarks on why she wants to scrap Trident. She said:

“Replacing Trident is neither necessary nor sensible. Missile test failures only add to the overwhelming amount of evidence against Trident renewal. Rather than pouring billions into this cold war relic we should be providing our troops with the equipment they need to keep safe – and investing in real security measures for a country under strain like a fully-functioning NHS and a world-class social care system."
