Dear Chancellor,
We are writing ahead of the budget on 3rd March to urge you to extend the temporary full business rates holiday, that has been in place for the retail, hospitality, leisure and childcare sectors, into the 2021-22 financial year, and potentially longer.
As Brighton and Hove businesses, we face a cliff edge when business rates become due again from April. We are worried that the welcome support for businesses provided by the Treasury to date will be undermined if, as is likely, we cannot survive the demand for business rates to be paid from April.
It was always the case that some sectors would need support for longer than others and we are calling on you to recognise this is the case. Our high streets, hospitality, tourism and other key parts of the local economy are still operating at vastly reduced capacity because of the pandemic. The CBI, BCC and the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) have all noted that, whilst much has been done by the Treasury, businesses need more help to weather the economic storms caused by Covid-19 – taking the opportunity to extend the business rates holiday is a critical way you could address this.
As we recover from the pandemic, things need to be done differently, with business rates reform long overdue. But the recovery needs us to successfully navigate the ongoing and very immediate challenges we face - and we need your help on 3rd March to do that.
