People's Assembly Against Austerity gathers in Brighton
30 May 2013
Campaigners against the Coalition Government's failed austerity drive will congregate in Brighton and Hove this evening ahead of a national anti-austerity rally in June.
The People's Assembly Against Austerity will host a meeting from 7pm to 10pm at the Brighthelm Church and Community Centre on North Road, with speakers including Caroline Lucas MP, journalist Owen Jones, and comedian Mark Steel.
Caroline, who helped to launch the People’s Assembly earlier this year, said:
"After its hugely successful launch in February, I am delighted that the People’s Assembly Against Austerity is gathering in Brighton and Hove this evening.
"The meeting is a vital opportunity to explore what role our city can play in challenging this Government’s socially destructive and economically illiterate austerity programme in the run up to the London rally on 22 June.
"With the Joseph Rowntree Foundation warning that tax rises, swingeing welfare cuts and wage freezes will push over 7 million children below the breadline in the next two years, it’s time to expose the lie is that there is no alternative to austerity.
"There are real, big, radical alternatives but very few people articulating them in parliament or in the media – that’s where the People’s Assembly comes in.
"This is a chance for civil society to come together and take a stand against the harmful ideology which claims austerity is essential, that public is bad and private is good, and that everything from our health service to education is little more than a market place to be exploited for profit.
"And if we’re united, we’re stronger."
