No to Revenge Evictions

The fight isn’t over...

The Tenancies (Reform) Bill, which had its second reading today in Parliament, seeks to protect tenants against retaliatory eviction.

I backed it, speaking on behalf of the growing number of private rented sector tenants in Brighton Pavilion – no one should live in fear of eviction every time they ask for basic repairs to their home.

It’s a complete travesty of democracy that two Conservative MPs were able to deliberately drown out justice by talking out this Bill

A simple clarification of when a ‘Section 21’ notice cannot be served could help transform millions of lives and help ensure that more people live securely in homes of a decent standard – the actions of the two MPs today were desperately irresponsible.

But the fight isn’t over.

I, and many others, will continue to act on this to end the threat of revenge evictions for good.

My huge thanks to the great work and lobbying of local organisations like Home Sweet Home, Citizens Advice Bureau, Brighton Housing Trust, and Generation Rent for all their work for better housing in the city.

The Bill is also backed by national housing and homelessness charity, Shelter, among many other organisations.
