Cold Homes Crisis

The Energy Bill Revolution lays out a fair solution to cold homes, calling on policy-makers to make all UK homes super energy efficient, prioritising the homes of the fuel poor. It calls for the infrastructure budget to be used to make six million low income homes super insulated by 2025 and get two million homes to this standard by 2020.

This would make a real difference to climate change targets, would bring over 100,000 new jobs, and would generate £1.27 in tax revenues for every £1 invested.

It’s a call that’s supported by a wide range of children's and older people's charities, health and disability groups, environment groups, consumer groups, trade unions and businesses.

Although the South East isn’t the UK region most visibly experiencing cold this week, the problem of cold homes is as important in Brighton & Hove as it is anywhere. 5,312 households in my constituency of Brighton Pavilion are in fuel poverty and approximately 2500 children live in families who have fallen behind on their energy bills. As I’ve highlighted to Ministers, cold homes cost the NHS more than £1.3 billion every year, with children growing up in cold homes twice as likely to contract diseases such as asthma.

During Cold Homes Week (Feb 2-6) I’m calling on the Government to end the cold homes crisis once and for all. I hope you’ll join me in doing so..
