CAROLINE LUCAS - FREE OF WHIPS, FREE TO REPRESENT YOU

Brian May, during his Brighton visit on Monday to support Caroline, voiced his concern that MPs are 'too much influenced by the whip who'll make them vote according to the party line'.

Whips are a political party's "enforcers," - they offer rewards or threaten party members to ensure they vote in line with party policy. The word comes from the hunting term "whipping in," i.e. preventing hounds from wandering away from the pack.

Party Whips wield extraordinary power over their MPs – the system actively obstructs democracy and progressive reform.

CAROLINE:  “I have seen whips literally pushing people through the aye lobby and the no lobby, even if they are saying, ‘I don’t want to vote this way'. People don’t know what they’re voting on, and I think that’s shocking.”
