Caroline: Politics isn’t just about elections and Parliament – it’s everything we do

THE widespread disillusionment with politicians will be addressed head on by Caroline Lucas on Wednesday at a public meeting titled 'If democracy isn't working, why vote?'

Caroline, Parliamentary candidate for Brighton Pavilion, will focus on why turnout in general elections has been gradually dropping, and putting paid to the myth that this is because people don't care about politics.

She says: “My experience is that people care very much about what is happening in the world. But what they don't have respect for is the Westminster club of mostly white, middle aged men in grey suits who often seem completely out of touch with their constituents.  Recent votes to water down the right to recall MPs, and the ability to control corporate lobbyists have added to people’s anger.

“They’re disillusioned by the Punch and Judy style of politics. By the impression that it’s men making decisions behind closed doors that protect their own self interests rather than the country as a whole.

“We urgently need to reform our parliamentary process.  But politics is not just about elections and Parliament. Politics is also the Occupy Movement, UK Uncut, Greenpeace and the Arctic 30. Politics is huge numbers of people using websites like 38 Degrees to sign petitions. Or taking to twitter and Facebook.  People demonstrate for what they believe – and sometimes risk arrest for it.

“So why vote? Because if you don't, the other politicians may believe you are apathetic and content to let them get on with the job of running the country as they want.  Secondly because it's essential there are politicians in the House of Commons to hold the other parties to account.

“I'm asking you to vote for me because it's vital there are strong, independent minded MPs who aren't controlled by party whips so can put Brighton first; who will keep promises, and who will continue to make a difference in Parliament.

“It's not all about the big debates in Parliament, it's about the little things that make a difference too. I genuinely feel proud of being able to help so many local people with everything from getting a passport in time for a much anticipated holiday to getting consumer complaints successfully addressed.

“So don't stay at home on May 7 because no one will know why you haven't voted. Go out and vote for the candidate with the policies you believe in.”
