In 1996, Pete West became the first Green councillor elected in Sussex.
What followed was a story of unparalleled Green electoral success, which culminated in Caroline's election as the first Green MP in the UK for Brighton Pavilion constituency in the 6 May 2010 general election.
After Pete opened the way, 1999 saw two more Greens take the remaining seats in the ward Pete represents.
In May 2003 the number of Green councillors doubled again, with seats won in two more wards.
In 2005, Keith Taylor brought home the best Green General Election result ever of 22%. The next year the respected sitting Labour MP, David Lepper, announced he would step down at the next election.
After the May 2007 elections Greens in Brighton formed the largest group of councillors on any principal authority in England and Wales. With one less seat than Labour, Greens are now poised to become the official opposition on Tory-led Brighton & Hove City Council.
Caroline Lucas was first elected as South East MEP in 1999.
With Caroline’s re-election in 2004, Greens out polled Labour in Brighton Pavilion constituency taking an estimated 27% of the Euro vote and beat Labour across the entire city.
With 30% of the vote in Brighton Pavilion at the 2007 council elections, Greens now hold more seats than any other party in the constituency: Greens nine, Tories six, Labour five.
Caroline resigned her Euro-MP seat following her election to Parliament in May 2010 and was succeeded by Keith Taylor, the next Green candidate on the list.
