Delighted to read that the One Brighton development in New England Street has won a national prize for sustainability. When I visited last year I was incredibly impressed. With heating and hot water provided by a biomass boiler, electricity from a solar panel, mini roof allotments and composting on-site, it is an innovative and impressive building. No parking is provided and residents cannot apply for parking permits,
making these perfect homes for those trying to cut their carbon
footprints.
Car free developments were scrapped by the Council when the Conservatives came into power locally in 2007 - strange (but not surprising!) for a party that claims to be serious about tackling climate change and reducing emissions - but luckily the idea was reintroduced by Green councillors working with Labour and the LibDems locally.
And a good thing, too - seeing just how well One Brighton is doing is extremely encouraging.

I moved into the One Brighton development last October. The comments in this article give the impression it is wonderful. In reality, there have been problems with the heating system, meaning a number of residents have had inadequate heating over an extremely cold winter (still not resolved and in addition, an extortionate daily standing charge amounting to the equivalent of fuel consumption which nobody was made aware of until they received their fuel bill!). A small number of antisocial tenants have already caused damage which will very likely cause an increase in the service charge levied by the managing agents, and I think that some residents couldn't care less about carbon footprints, more where their next can of lager or fix is coming from. Despite the fact that there are adequate recycling bins located outside the main entrances, some residents do not seem to be capable of using them, preferring to dump their rubbish next to them for somebody else to deal with. You can lead a horse to water....... Perhaps they should have waited until the buildings were fully occupied for a few months and held a residents satisfaction survey before awarding prizes!
