News that a whopping 100 people ended up in hospital today with broken bones after falling on Brighton's icy pavements is really shocking. According to Help the Aged and Age Concern, many older residents who break a limb in a fall never fully recover.
While the Council seems to be working hard to keep the main roads open, the failure to grit side streets and pavements means that many, especially the elderly, feel completely stranded. In a place as full of hills and slopes as Brighton, I'd assumed (like many residents!) that the council would have a plan in the event of snow.

I have set up a Facebook group "Reinstall Grit Bins In Brighton And Hove" if anyone is interested. Our aim now is to campaign for an increase in the amount of grit bins provided.

The response was a complete disgrace. Anyone living on a hill was completely isolated for 4 days - no buses, milk, post or taxis, and the pavements were treacherous - in fact Sussex County Hospital treated over 1000 people that weekend. Any puny amount saved by council gritting budgets being inadequate were soaked up by an already stretched Health Service. And having checked the council website - there are three gritting boxes for the Queen's Park area !!! We aren't even given the facilities to help each other. Shocking
